Visit to the Marble Quarries
The marble quarries have been the economic and social hub of the Apuan territory for at least two millennia. Corchia Park offers the opportunity to visit some of these stone cathedrals, carved into the white marble heart of the mountain.
VISIT ROUTE
Upon arriving at the quarry, visitors put on protective helmets and venture into the immense marble halls. Visiting a quarry means entering a spectacular environment, completely unlike anything you have seen before.
The quarry does not conform to human scale; it has the dimensions of giants, with ceilings soaring tens of meters high, enormous halls, gigantic blocks, and excavation machinery weighing up to 80 tons.
TYPES OF VISIT
VISIT TO A FUNCTIONING QUARRY
This is a fascinating visit to the quarry during extraction activities; the experience, while conducted in complete safety, allows you to closely observe the processing stages and the movement of the enormous cutting and transport machinery.
The visit lasts approximately 2.5 hours in total, from departure from the CorchiaPark ticket office in the village of Levigliani to return.
VISIT WITH "CAVATORE'S" BREAKFAST OR SNACK
The profession of the “cavatore” (quarry worker) demands a high caloric intake, and over time, a tradition has developed of having breakfast or a snack consisting of lard and bread, which the quarry workers consume between meals.
The visit takes place during non-operational days of the quarrying activities and offers, in addition to incredible scenery and breathtaking views, a cavatore’s breakfast or snack.
Depending on whether the visit occurs in the morning or afternoon, the breakfast or snack is served on the panoramic terrace overlooking the valley. From here, you can oversee Forte dei Marmi and enjoy clear views of Corsica and the entire Ligurian coast up to France. These breakfasts and snacks are true tastings of typical Versilia products from local small producers and wine aged within the Antro del Corchia cave.
