Antro del Corchia Tourist Cave

The karst system of the Antro del Corchia is one of the largest underground environments in Europe and among the most extensive in the world. This complex of tunnels, shafts, and chambers was carved by water over millions of years in the marble heart of Monte Corchia. To date, approximately 70 km of caves have been explored and mapped, with as many as 20 different entrances on every side of the mountain. Ongoing explorations by speleologists continue to uncover new chambers and hidden beauties within the marble.

VISIT ROUTE

The tourist visit to the Antro del Corchia covers approximately 2000 meters along a wide steel walkway that ensures maximum safety for visitors. The tour is guided, conducted in groups, and lasts about two hours. The difficulty level of the path is equivalent to that of a very light and short trek. The visit is recommended for children over three years of age and for those without mobility issues or acute heart conditions.

Access to the Antro del Corchia is via a 170-meter artificial tunnel, specifically excavated to provide entrance to the cave without affecting the natural openings. Upon passing through the tunnel, you arrive at the Franosa Gallery, a spectacular canyon tens of meters high, at the base of which runs the walkway. The Franosa gives way to the English Gallery, named in honor of the British explorers who discovered it in the 1960s. Here, you can observe the first giant formations and a fossil underground lake. The tour concludes with “the loop,” a circular route showcasing the most spectacular underground environment you can see: immense halls adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, stunning formations, and a series of artworks sculpted by water and rock over millions of years.

HISTORY

The Antro del Corchia is such an enormous underground environment that even today, centuries after its discovery, it remains a site of ongoing exploration and continues to be an exciting frontier for speleologists and abyss explorers. The first entrance was discovered in 1840 by the naturalist Emilio Simi. Today, there are twenty known entrances. Since the early 20th century, the Antro has been explored by speleological groups from all over Europe; the British explorers, who were the first to explore part of the path now housing the tourist gallery, are legendary. In the 1980s, different explorations starting from various entrances converged within the mountain, revealing that they were exploring a single, gigantic karst complex. The tourist route was opened in 2001, following two years of work that involved the installation of a steel walkway weighing a total of 52 tons, designed to be completely dismantled in the future to restore the original underground environment.
