Levigliani museums
The community of Levigliani is one of the last “Comunelli” in Tuscany, holding collective, common, and undivided ownership of their territory. In its development, over time, the residents have sought a way to work freely and establish a model of “community supply chain” to redistribute the economic value produced through social works and activities to all members of the resident community.
Community and business museum “Lavorare Liberi”
The community of Levigliani has been connected for centuries to the marble extraction activities of the Apuan Alps. Unlike other places, here the townspeople, through historical vicissitudes, managed to obtain direct management of the extraction sites and organize work cooperatively, allowing all community members to access work without being dependent on external companies.
In Levigliani, a successful early model of common goods management was developed. Even today, the town’s resources are managed by a common goods commission, a unique body formed by the town’s inhabitants. This incredible story of collective organization, entrepreneurship, and equality has received significant recognition over the years, including accolades from the President of the Republic. Today, the “Lavorare Liberi” museum offers visitors a glimpse into this economic and social history through objects, documents, and testimonies.
Museo della Pietra Piegata
The ease of working with marble, combined with its pure white color and spectacular veining, has made it a favored material for sculpture and stonework over the centuries. The Museo della Pietra Piegata offers an overview of marble craftsmanship through the ages: from the roughest objects to finely inlaid works, from common artifacts to sacred pieces. The artisanal skill in working with this precious material, still present in the region today, is documented in this museum, allowing visitors to trace its history and envision its future. Particularly interesting are the funerary stone works from the period of the Liguri Apuani (3rd century BC) discovered in the nearby necropolis.
